Wall Paintings

A day in Philadelphia was possibly the most super-charged inspiration trip I have ever had. From a meeting in the Naval Yard to a quick tour of the City, followed by a  visit to a steel works, art studio, tennis club and my host’s home, I hope the pictures will provide a flavour of my experience. To start with, here’s just some original walls from the Naval Yard. Untouched, but very much respected by their new owners, age has only improved them. An obvious inspiration for many more modern establishments with ‘vintage’ interiors. This is definitely not colour by numbers.

A light launch in Paris

So onto part 2 of the Paris adventure. We tried to focus on lunch, but the entertainment was too good to miss. And, of course, the moment we were all waiting for – the reveal of the new Diet Coke bottles designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. Three in all, of which two are already out there, the third to follow in September. The man is a true genius. He’s compelling, engaging and genuinely looks like he’s having the best time in the room. His ability to handle the interviews with such enthusiasm and honesty throughout the day and night is testament to his enduring career in the fickle world of fashion. Plus we were given the exclusive news that his next collaboration will be with Madonna for her forthcoming tour. More ‘Material Girl’ than costume drama.

A ‘light’ lunch in Paris

It’s not every day that you spend an afternoon at The Crazy Horse. Or watch a one-off show created to celebrate a new partnership between two incredible icons. It’s no secret who they are, since the news broke a few days ago. But I’ll save my pictures for the next post. For now, here’s ‘un avant-goût.’ Lights (and illusions), cameras (allowed), action (lots). It’s a whole new approach to doing business over lunch – which the French seem to do effortlessly and with more style than most. Bon appétit.

Beyond Time

I recently had the privilege to visit the studio where a significant amount of artist William Turnbull’s work is kept. It’s an unassuming place from the outside, but it hides a fascinating and extensive collection of his works including paintings, sculptures and drawings. His son, Alex, is a good friend and took me on a guided tour of the key pieces which provided an insight into what was happening in European art and culture from the 1940′s onwards. Bill was one of the forefathers of modern art and, of particular note, is Bill’s involvement with ‘The Independent Group’ in the 1950′s – a movement that was at the genesis of pop art (and had the spirit of punk 25 years before its time). His work, life and artistic journey have been turned into a film directed by Alex, featuring a great soundtrack by 23 Skidoo.  The movie, ‘Beyond Time,’ recently premiered at the ICA – an event hosted by Nicholas Serota and the film’s narrator Jude Law. Amongst many incredible stories, there’s a moment where a renowned collector and dealer states that the only artist who’s work deserves to sit alongside a room full of Rothko’s is that of William Turnbull! It’s never too late.

Tommy Gun

An early morning visit to the shooting range in Rumilly was a first. Under the guidance of my friend Annabel Andre Laurent and her contact who is a personal bodyguard for a wealthy family in Geneva, I shot a variety of devices including a Smith & Weston 38mm, an automatic 22mm revolver, a 9mm revolver, and an M4 rifle that was the daddy of them all. An amazing experience. Intense. But strangely satisfying. And a great way to clear the mind. Don’t try this at home.

Breathe in Breathe out

A full ‘tour du lac’ on bike is close to 46km. It’s a fairly easy ride, a few gentle climbs and descents, but mainly flat. The majority of the journey is on dedicated cycle paths so no traffic, rogue pedestrians or stray dogs. The scenery is stunning and is the reason why you’d be crazy to make this a race against the clock. Take your time, load some film, and enjoy the view. Breathless, for all the right reasons.
